Via Hrabal Tours Three US Cities

The Embassy of the Czech Republic will present the humorous multimedia presentation VIA HRABAL, about the lives of Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal and former Czech President Václav Havel, in Washington, New York and Baltimore as part of the recent 100th anniversary of the birth of Hrabal and the 80th anniversary of the birth of Havel. The performance is presented through the memories of their friends: Tomáš Mazal, Václav Špale, and Jiří Rejthar, with technical support provided by Jan Čapek.

In this unique presentation, Hrabal’s biographer Tomáš Mazal presents a look inside Hrabal’s life, the places and people that influenced his personal and artistic journey. Set designer Václav Špale uses a vivid display of texts, photographs, drawings, and video sequences to showcase a collage of the author’s artistry. Last but not least, Jiří Rejthar, a chef who served both Havel and Hrabal, guides viewers through Czech cuisine and brewing episodes of the two literary greats.

The performance runs a little over an hour and will be presented in both English and Czech.
