Czech Republic's President Zeman Congratulates Donald Trump

The President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman sent congratulations to Donald Trump on November 9, 2016.

Mr. President-elect:

It is with great pleasure to add my warmest congratulations on your election as the President of the United States of America.

When I, one of a few European leaders, supported you during the tense election campaign, I knew that with you the United States would get a president with a new and fresh look on a number of current policy issues. My political opponents have called me the “Czech Donald Trump” as they have noticed that you and I share views on topics like the fight against terrorism and the so-called Islamic State or global migration.  I am proud of such a label and I have never understood it as an insult.

Long before the Election Day I was also convinced that with your election, a new phase of the Czech-American relations and transatlantic cooperation would begin. The good relations between our two countries have a long tradition; there is the largest Czech compatriot community living abroad in the United States; your country is the biggest business partner for Czech exporters outside of Europe; we have been working closely together on the most important foreign policy issues in today's world like the fight against terrorism or assistance in Syria; we share common values of democracy and freedom. The United States has truly been our strategic partner.

Dear President-elect, the Czech Republic as well as I personally look forward to working with you and your administration and to continue developing the close relations which our countries enjoy. I hope you will soon visit the Czech Republic where I have the honor to invite you. Congratulations again!

Yours Sincerely,

Miloš Zeman

President of the Czech Republic
