Deputy Minister Chmelař Attends the Second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom in Washington

Deputy Foreign Minister Aleš Chmelař visited Washington, D.C., on July 16-19, 2019. The Deputy Minister attended the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom, spoke on a panel at the Atlantic Council and met with partners at the State Department, Department of Commerce, Department of Energy and the USTR.
 

Deputy Minister Chmelař has attended the second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom aimed at drawing attention of the international community to this topic, emphasizing the importance of support for freedom of religion and the prevention of violence in the name of religion. Over one hundred representatives of governments and international organizations attended the Ministerial, together with representatives of religious organizations and civil society. In his speech, Deputy Minister Chmelař spoke of growing intolerance in the society and the restriction of the freedom of religion, including on the Internet.

Together with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia, Hungary and Poland Deputy Minister Chmelař spoke at a conference organized by the Atlantic Council: The United States and Central Europe: Tasks for Second Century Together.


Deputy Minister Chmelař also met with Assistant Secretary of Energy Ted Garish and other representatives of the US administration. At the Department of State, he discussed Czech-US and EU-US relations and the current situation in Eastern Europe. He also met counterparts at the Office of US Trade Representative and Department of Commerce.
