Minister of Foreign Affairs Tomáš Petříček visited the United States


Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Tomáš Petříček visited the United States of America on February 20 – 23, 2019. In Washington, he met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor John Bolton and USAID Administrator Mark Green. Minister Petříček also met with representatives of Czech businesses in the US and US investors in the Czech Republic, participated in a roundtable with experts in CSIS and the National Endowment for Democracy, and met with Czech community in Washington.
 

Discussing Czech-American relations, Minister Petříček and Secretary Pompeo talked about joint celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the Czech Republic's NATO accession and the 30th anniversary of the fall of communism in Central Europe. Minister Petříček invited his US counterpart to the Czech Republic. In their meeting, they touched upon economic relations and cooperation in security issues focusing in particular on the area of cybersecurity. They also covered a number of issues of common interest including Afghanistan and Syria. Secretary Pompeo appreciated Czech engagement in Afghanistan and assured Minister Petříček that the US plan to coordinate their future steps in the region with their allies, including the Czech Republic. He also thanked Minister Petříček for the assistance in Syria, where the Czech Republic serves as the US protecting power, and for Czech support in the fight against the so-called Islamic State.

Minister Petříček's meeting with the US National Security Advisor John Bolton focused mainly on defense and security cooperation while his meeting with USAID administrator Mark Green, brought about an agreement to expand cooperation on joint development projects in Africa, Syria and Venezuela.

During his visit, Minister Petříček also participated in roundtable discussions with experts at  CSIS and NED focusing on strategic regional issues and human rights and democracy promotion agenda respectively. The Minister also met representatives of Czech businesses in the US and US investors in the Czech Republic. While opening an exhibition "The Other Life" at the Czech Embassy, he had met with representatives of American Friends of the Czech Republic and other members of Czech community living in the metropolitan area.
