President of the Senate of the Czech Republic visited the United States

President of the Senate of the Czech Republic Jaroslav Kubera visited the U.S. from 20th to 24th October 2019. In Norfolk President Kubera visited the NATO military base. In Richmond he met with the Governor and the Lt. Governor of Virginia and the Mayor of Richmond. President Kubera ended his visit in Washington DC, where he met his counterparts in U.S. Senate, Madeleine Albright and participated in the celebrations of the Czech National Day.

President of the Senate began his visit to the United States at the NATO ACT base in Norfolk, where he was welcomed by SACT General Lanata and met with a group of Czech servicemen. The Senate delegation also toured the USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier. In Richmond Senator Kubera met with Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax and Mayor of Richmond Levar Stoney. The Senate delegation also visited The Prince George County Regional Heritage Center and met with the vibrant Virginian community of Czech-Americans.

In Washington, D.C. Senator Kubera met with Senator Ron Johnson, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe, Senator John Barrasso, a member of the Subcommittee on Europe and Senator Joe Manchin and discussed the transatlantic alliance, as well as key issues and challenges for energy and cyber security. President of the Senate also met former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, whom he awarded with the Senate Silver Commemorative Medal. The Senate delegation also honored the memory of victims of communism at the Victims of Communism Memorial.

During the visit of the President of the Senate an Agreement between the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Department of Energy for science and technology cooperation in energy and related fields was signed.

While in Washington the President of the Senate also took part in the celebrations of the Czech National Day. Together with other dignitaries, he paid tribute to Tomas Garrigue Masaryk during the wreath laying ceremony; he officially unveiled a graffiti for the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution by Czech Artist Jan Kaláb in Dupont Underground and offered his remarks at the National Day reception at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in DC. Also in Washington the Senate delegation met with Czech-Americans, representatives of Czech schools and associations.
