In case of any changes in your trip, inform the Consulate beforehand.

 

General information on Schengen (short-stay) visa application

A uniform Schengen (short-stay) visa allows its holder to stay in the Schengen Area for the duration identified in the visa, which can be 90 days at most. It is issued for one entry, two entries or multiple entries and as an airport transit visa. It is possible, in exceptional situation, to issue a Schengen (short-stay) visa with limited territorial validity – in such a case the visa is valid only for the Schengen states specified in the visa or for the Czech Republic only.

Who files the application

The applicant files the application in person. Parents / legal guardians file application for a child younger than 15 years.

 

Where to file the application

Applicants file their applications at the diplomatic mission of that Schengen Area state which is the only or main destination. When visiting several Schengen Area states, the main destination constitutes the state, where the stay will be the longest. If the duration of stay in several Schengen Area states is equal, the main destination constitutes the state, in which the main purpose of travel lies (for example conference participation). If it is not possible to determine the main destination based on these criteria, the application is filed at the diplomatic mission of that Schengen Area state which constitutes the entry in the Schengen Area (i.e. will be visited the first).

If the Czech Republic is the only or the main destination, the application is to be filed at the diplomatic mission of the Czech Republic.

The applicants file their applications in the state of which they are either a citizen or a long-term resident. In case there is no diplomatic mission of the Czech Republic in this state, the application is filed at the diplomatic mission which is accredited for that state (usually located in a neighboring state) or at the diplomatic mission of another Schengen Area state if the Czech Republic concluded a representation agreement with this state.

If more diplomatic missions of the Czech Republic are located in one state (for example an embassy and consulate(s) general), the application is filed at the diplomatic mission located in the consular district where the applicant resides.

The application can also be filed through an accredited travel agency – more at websites of the diplomatic missions of the Czech Republic that use this service.

 

When to file the application

The application can be filed 6 months before the trip. The maximum processing time is 15 days (longer processing time is possible but exceptional), the application should therefore not be filed less than 15 days before the trip. The application filed less than 15 days before the trip may not be processed in time.

Only one Schengen (short-stay) visa sticker can be issued in a passport. Holders of a multiple Schengen (short-stay) visa can file the application during its validity, provided it is valid for more than six months.

 

Group visitors

In case of 5 and more visitors who travel together to the same destination on the official, scientific, sport, medical and dance purpose, applicants receive the date of the arrangement directly from the Consular section of the Embassy.

How long can one stay

The duration of the Schengen (short-stay) visa is determined by the required length of stay based on the supporting documents.

90/180 rule: The short-term stay in the Schengen Area cannot exceed 90 days within 180 days. If the length of stay has reached 90 days, it is required to leave the Schengen Area. It is the responsibility of the visitor to count the days and not to exceed the allowed number of days. In case of multiple entries, the accumulated amount of days can be determined by the entry/exit stamps in the passport. A useful tool to calculate the amount of days in the Schengen Area is the so-called Norwegian Calculator.

90/180 rule does not apply to visitors who (1) stayed in the Czech Republic / Schengen Area on the basis of a Schengen (short-stay) visa and for the subsequent stay received an additional short-stay visa for the Czech Republic only (this visa is issued only on a very exceptional basis), (2) will stay in the Czech Republic based on a long-term visa or residence permit, or (3) will stay in the Czech Republic based on a bilateral agreement.

 

Decision to issue visa

The decision on a Schengen (short-stay) visa is normally made within 7-15 days. Longer processing time is possible, but exceptional.

Processing time can also be shorter based on visa facilitation agreements.

 

Visa refusal

In case of Schengen (short-stay) visa refusal (and annulment or revocation), the applicant receives a notification form stating the reason for visa refusal and guidance on possible further steps – for example filing a new visa application or requesting review of the visa refusal (appeal). Request for the review of visa refusal (appeal) must be received by the diplomatic mission that refused the visa within 15 days after receiving the negative decision – in original with original signature of the appellant (i.e. in person, by mail or data box). Instructions are also given in the notification form.

The appeal is subject to a fee of EUR 60.

 

 

 

Entry in the Czech Republic / Schengen Area

Police of the Czech Republic may ask the visitor to present the supporting documents that were submitted in support of the visa application during the passport control upon entry in the Czech Republic. Visa issuance does not grant automatic right of entry.

 

Registering after entry

A visitor older than 15 years is required to register at a local branch of an Alien Police Inspectorate the within three days after arrival in the Czech Republic. A hotel makes the registration for the hotel guests.

 

Visa extension

Visa extension can be requested in exceptional cases through a local branch of an Alien Police Inspectorate at least 30 days and at most three days before the visa expiry.
