"Burning Bush" Wins the SIGNIS Award at the HKIFF

The Czech movie "Burning Bush" (Hořící keř) directed by Agnieszka Holland, has won the SIGNIS Award the 38th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF).

Burning Bush is a three-part mini-series created orignally for HBO by world-renowned Polish director Agnieszka Holland. Based on real characters and events, this haunting drama focuses on the personal sacrifice of a Prague history student, Jan Palach, who set himself on fire in protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1969. The film sets a high artistic standard for its portrayal of how one person’s actions can become the catalyst for positive change and also for how it addresses issues of social justice, oppression, human dignity, the struggle for truth, solidarity, and human freedom.

His Eminence, Cardinal John Tong, Bishop of Hong Kong, presented the SIGNIS Award during the awards gala with applause from more than 200 audiences in the Rotunda Hall of the Kowloon bay International Trade & Exhibition Centre on 5th April 2014. Jaroslav Kanturek, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong came and accepted the award on behalf of the director.

SIGNIS Award has been introduced to HKIFF since 2004 and co-organized with SIGNIS HONG KONG. It is given to films for cinematic excellence in expressing social and humanitarian concerns, as well as spiritual and artistic values.

The members of the SIGNIS Jury were: Douglas P. Fahleson (Ireland), Fr. Jo Yongjun Nicholas (South Korea) and Loura Foo (Hong Kong).
