Statement of the MFA on the Current Situation in Burma/Myanmar

 

The Czech Republic supports the right of the demonstrants in Burma/Myanmar to express their peaceful protest and the efforts of Burmese activists for the renewal of democracy and political dialogue...(Updated 27/9/2007)

The Czech Republic strongly condemns the use of security forces and the use of force against demonstrants in Burma/Myanmar. The cizitens have the right to express their opinion.

In relation to information about victims and injured people among demonstrants the Czech Republic again urgently calls on the Government of Burma for not using force and solving the situation by peaceful means, for the release of all political prisoners and for starting a democratic dialogue with the opposition.

The Czech Republic supports the right of the demonstrants in Burma/Myanmar to express their peaceful protest and the efforts of Burmese activists for the renewal of democracy and political dialogue.

The Czech Republic strongly warns the Government of Burma against using force on quiet demonstrations and calls on the Government of Burma for an immediate release of democratic activists and all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Czech Republic also calls on the Government of Burma for starting a dialogue with all opposition structures in favour of the inhabitants of Burma/Myanmar.

The situation in Burma was discussed at the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in New York. It has been agreed that the EU is ready to take further steps against the Burmese military junta depending on the current development of the situation. The Czech Republic si for a high-principled position in case the Burmese authorities use force against the demonstrants.
