Czech Republic joins the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement in WIPO

On Thursday, June 2, Ambassador Václav Bálek deposited to the WIPO Director General Daren Tang the instrument on accession of the Czech Republic to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement. President of Czech Industrial Property Office Josef Kratochvíl was present at the ceremony.

The Geneva Act further extends the protection of the WIPO Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications.

Protection of this intellectual property has a long history in the Czech Republic, which was one of the signatory countries of the Lisbon Agreement from 1958, and which then actively participated also in the negotiations of the Geneva Act in 2015. To date, the Czech Republic has registered 75 appellations of origin within the Lisbon system.

Joining the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement will ensure continuity of protection for Czech entrepreneurs, support quality of their products, strengthen fair competition as well as the protection of consumers.
