Mandela Day in Mamelodi

On 25 July 2014, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Pretoria took part in Mandela Day activities at the Tshegofatsong Special School in Mamelodi. Czech as well as South African staff members planted three beds in the school vegetable garden.

And we had lots of fun! The Czech Embassy also donated soil, fertilizers, seeds and seedlings for the garden. We are a long-term partner of the school that is the only special school for learners with special educational needs in Mamelodi/Pretoria East.

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated each year on July 18 (Mandela’s birthday). The day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in November 2009. The Tshegofatsong Special School was closed for holidays on July 18 this year, so they scheduled activities for Friday a week later. Mandela Day is not a public holiday in South Africa. It serves as a call for volunteering and community service, recognizing Mandela’s principle that each and every individual can make an impact.
