2008-Public money collection ”SOS Greece“ realized by the Czech charity “People in Need” (Člověk v tísni)

The Czech charity “People in Need” promptly responded to the disastrous fires in Greece on 28 August 2007, launching a public collection “SOS Greece”. When the collection closed in the middle of February 2008, it has raised 306 700 Czech Crowns.

After an initial fact finding mission and through liaising with the Czech Embassy in Greece the money realise was used by People in Need to set up a humanitarian project culminating in the distribution of financial aid directly to Greece in April 2008.

The total amount of the collection was distributed among three villages in the most affected prefectures Messina and Ilias on the Peloponnesus. The financial aid was distributed among the people who live and work permanently in these affected areas. In the village Nea Figalia 5 000 EUR was distributed among 10 local farmers planting olive trees to recover destroyed plantations.

A further 5 000 EUR was donated to 10 families in the village Platanos near Olympia, whose houses were absolutely destroyed by the fire. Each family received a grant to cope with the first most critical moments to be able to search for other money for reconstruction.

With the rest of the collection 70 olive tree seedlings were bought and given to the village Piges near to the city Kalamata on the southern Peloponnesus.

The money from the Czech donors was delivered directly to people who needed the help most. All of them expressed their gratitude for the financial and material aid and also for the solidarity of the donors.
