Photo Exhibition ”Moments of Everyday Life“ in Helsinki

(This article expired 30.11.2023.)

On November 5, 2013 a photograph exhibition about the work of firemen in the Czech Republic was opened in Rikhardinkatu library. The exhibition was organized by Directorate General of the Fire Rescue Service (FRS) of the Ministry of the Interior CR with Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki in cooperation with Rikhardinkatu library. The exhibition was opened by the Czech Ambassador Martin Tomčo, Director General of FRS Brigadier General Drahoslav Ryba and the Director Of the Library Jorma Mähönen. Also Director-General Esko Koskinen from the Department for Rescue Services of the Ministry of the Interior of Finland was present. The exhibition is open till November 29, 2013.

Thirty photographs show the work of firemen in the way the firemen themselves recorded it when taking pictures across the Czech Republic. Through the photos the firemen record their distinctive view on an exceptional event. The photographs are not fully documentary ones but they also have an art dimension.

The work of firemen has changed a lot during the years. The fireman has become a general rescue worker who is called practically always in case of emergency. The motto of Czech firemen is “They go where others run away” or also “Fireman – a knight of 21th century”. Firemen are no longer seen fighting only against the fire. The major part of firemen´s activities is so called technical help, in the second place there are car accidents and only in the third place is the fire.  Since 2001 furthermore a great deal of civil protection tasks has been included into the firemen´s activity which is not common in all European countries.

The Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic (as a part of the Ministry of the Interior) thus solves all the emergency situations and at the same time is in charge of central coordination of rescue and liquidating works during large exceptional events such as floods which have been affecting the Czech Republic more often and the Czech rescue workers had to cope with them again in June this year.
