Discussion on energy crisis and possible solutions

On 23 November 2022, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki hosted a round table on the current energy crisis and its solutions. On behalf of the Finnish side, the discussion was attended by a representative of the Ministry of Economy and Employment and economic experts.

The round table was addressed by Riku Huttunen, Director of the Energy Section of the Ministry of Economy and Employment, Matti Liski, economist and professor at Aalto University, and Marita Laukkanen, senior researcher at the National Economic Research Institute VATT and adjunct professor of economics at the University of Helsinki. In addition to the representatives of the Czech Embassy, the discussion was also attended by the Ambassadors of France, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Poland, Romania and Spain.

The main topic was how the European Union and European countries should deal with the current energy crisis. Various measures to reduce the current high energy prices were discussed, including reduction of the price cap on the gas and electricity market and the reduction of energy consumption. The round table also discussed how consumers affected by the crisis should be supported. Although Finland is not as dependent on gas as other European countries, it is particularly affected by the energy crisis through high electricity prices. However, Finland is relatively well prepared for the upcoming winter and has managed to replace the energy import from Russia after the outbreak of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
