EU HoMs discussed current political affairs with representatives of the Prime Minister's Office

As part of the EU Presidency, the Czech Embassy in Helsinki held a meeting of ambassadors with the leadership of the Finnish Prime Minister's Office. The main topic of discussion was the upcoming European Council on 15 December 2022, which will focus on assistance to Ukraine facing Russian aggression, energy security and EU enlargement. Some important foreign policy topics such as Finland's accession to NATO or the country's relations with Asian partners were also on the agenda.

On 8 December 2022, the Czech Embassy in Helsinki hosted a working breakfast with Jari Luoto, State Under-Secretary for European Affairs and Director General of Government EU Affairs Department, Ms Saara Pokki, Special Adviser on EU Affairs, and Mr Lauri Voionmaa, Special Adviser on International Affairs. The meeting focused on the upcoming European Council and its conclusions, which are among other issues expected to comprehensively address financial, material and military assistance to Ukraine facing Russian aggression. Solutions to the energy crisis, including mitigating the impact of high pricesof energy and ensuring security of energy supply, were also discussed. Finland supports massive investments in green energy sources, weaning away from fossil fuels and maximum energy self-sufficiency combined with further building of interconnectors and development of hydrogen cluster.

Other topics discussed included the outcomes of the recent EU summit with the Western Balkan countries, the trip of Prime Minister Sanna Marin to Australia and New Zealand, the upcoming EU-ASEAN summit, Finland's accession to NATO and visa liberalization for Kosovo. Finland sees the importance of sharing democratic values and, in the context of partial deglobalization, of strengthening partnerships with like-minded countries, not only in the political sphere, but also in fields of energy, technology and access to precious metals.
