Visit of the Deputy Minister for Legal and Consular Affairs Martin Smolek in Norway

On 11 - 12th February 2020, the Deputy Minister for Legal and Consular Affairs, Martin Smolek, visited Norway. On that occasion, he participated at the ceremonial inauguration of the new Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Bergen and met his counterparts at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 

The initial part of his visit to Norway was dedicated to the inauguration ceremony of the new Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Bergen, Mr. Carl-Fredrik Joys. In his speech, the Deputy Minister Smolek expressed his hope that the new Honorary Consul will continue with work of his predecessor, Dag Stiegler, on commercial, consular and cultural matters in southwestern Norway. He thanked the outgoing Honorary Consul Stiegler for his excellent, more than thirty years long service to the Czech Republic and appreciated the results achieved by Mr. Stiegler in promoting and defending the good name of the Czech Republic in Norway.

The following day the Deputy Minister moved to Oslo where he visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Consular Assistance Center, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In the center he met with Director of Consular Affairs, Mr. Thomas Stangeby, with whom he discussed i. a. legislation on consular assistance to Norwegian citizens abroad, the experience gained so far in the operation of the Center and the costs of its operation discussed.

Subsequently the Deputy Minister Smolek met Director General of The Legal Affairs Department at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Helg Seland. In the course of discussion, they both highly appreciated the existing Czech-Norwegian cooperation in international legal forums and exchanged views on the legal aspects of current international political affairs, such as the UK withdrawal from the European Union, the deployment of military contingents in international missions, or the ICC territorial jurisdiction in Palestine.
