Opening of the 25th Annual outdoor sculpture exhibition “Sculpture by the Sea”, Bondi 2023

On October 19, 2023, the Consul-General of the Czech Republic in Sydney Zuzana Slováková attended the opening of the 25th Annual “Sculpture by the Sea” exhibition in Bondi.

The 25th year of the exhibition will once again turn the public space along the iconic Coastal Walk between Bondi and Tamarama Beach in Sydney into an open-air art gallery. The festival features the works of artists from all over the world. Works by Czech sculptors Václav Fiala and Milana Kuzica are among the many displayed during the festival, which will be running from October 20 to November 6, 2023.

The idea behind the outdoor sculptural exhibition was born in the former Czechoslovakia, where David Handley, the founder and artistic director of Sculpture by the Sea, was living in the beginning of the 90s. The very first “Sculpture by the Sea” – at the time only a one-day event – took place in Sydney in 1997. In the years to come, the festival grew and grew and for over 20 years now has been considered the largest free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition in the world and is visited by over 500,000 people a year.

Over the 25 years of its existence, the festival has exhibited 2,691 sculptures by 1,129 artists from 51 countries. Since the festival’s conception, Czech artists are regularly featured. In 2023, Václav Fiala’s “Vivat Ukrajina” and Milan Kuzica’s “Family – Natan” are displayed as part of the exhibition. The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Sydney is proud to support the Sculpture by the Sea festival in this special anniversary year – just as in years past.
