Celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Czech Republic's accession to NATO

The Czech Republic joined NATO on 12 March 1999, together with Poland and Hungary. On Tuesday March 26 we celebrated the 25th anniversary of NATO membership together at the Estonian War Museum.

Guests from diplomatic and military missions were welcomed by representatives of all three countries. In their speeches they did not forget to mention how important it is to be part of the strongest military pact in the world, especially at the present time.

The accession of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland was decided at the NATO Summit in Madrid in July 1997. In December of the same year, the foreign ministers of the NATO member states signed protocols for the accession of these three countries. On March 12, 1999 they officially became members when the Czech Foreign Minister, together with the Foreign Ministers of Poland and Hungary, presented the instruments of ratification to US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in Independence, USA.

As part of the celebrations, the Estonian daily Postimees published a joint article by the Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský and Ambassador David Král on  March 12 in which the they assessed a quarter of a century of our membership in NATO.

On the day of the anniversary, an exhibition mapping 25 years of Czech membership in NATO was launched at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Estonia. The outdoor exhibition is open to the public at Lahe 4 in Tallinn where the Embassy is located.
