Film & Beer Series: If a Thousand Clarinets

Bistro Bohem will present the film "If a Thousand Clarinets" (Kdyby tisíc klarinetů) as part of the ongoing Film and Beer Series on July 18, 2017, at 7 pm. In this classic, musical comedy, a reporter uncovers a military base where rifles have mysteriously transformed into musical instruments. The film features many stars from the 60s and musical numbers - from rock 'n' roll to jazz. As the commander in the film says, "Music is the triumph of the human spirit." Enjoy an evening of film and beer that will keep your feet tapping.

Soldier Schulz deserts the army, taking refuge in a school. During the chase, the rifles of the soldiers in pursuit of Schulz start mysteriously transforming into musical instruments. Meanwhile, the local spa town of Alkalis gets ready to unveil a statue dedicated to classical music legend Bach. When two children make a debacle of the ceremony, the reporter spontaneously finds other news in the military barracks that later become the grounds for a TV show. 

Directors:
Jan Roháč (1932-1980) was a television and theater director. He graduated from DAMU in Prague and worked at leading Czech theaters as well as in TV, making several successful movies, series and programs, such as the talk show Hovory H (1968) and Once There Were Two Typists (Byli jednou dva písaři, 1972).

Vladimír Svitáček (1921-2002) was a film and television director, screenwriter and actor. He first worked at Barrandov Studios and later graduated from FAMU. He debuted with the film The End of the Fortune-Teller (Konec jasnovidce, 1957 - filmed together with Jan Roháč, with whom he formed a creative partnership). From his extensive TV productions, he made A Pound on Demand (Uspořená libra, 1963) and the talk show Hovory H. (1968). Both directors won success with the musical comedy If a Thousand Clarinets (1964), and the interactive experiment Kinoautomat: One Man and His House (Člověk a jeho dům, 1967).

About the series: This marks the sixth year of the Film and Beer Series at Bistro Bohem. This year, the series focuses on Czech musicals and comedies of the twentieth century. All films will screen in Czech with English subtitles. Each screening includes one free beer as well as an introduction by a representative from the Czech Embassy. All screenings are subject to change
