Unveiling of Václav Fiala’s sculpture "Universum" and launch of the English translation of the book Bed in Australia.

A work from the Czech Republic became a new addition to Sculpture by the Sea’s “Snowy Valleys Sculpture Trail” collection. The monumental work “Universum” by renowned Czech sculptor Václav Fiala, was officially unveiled on April 20, 2024 as part of a new permanent sculpture collection at the Pilot Hill Arboretum, by the Consul-General of the Czech Republic in Sydney Zuzana Slováková, the founder and artistic director of Sculpture by the Sea David Handley, representatives of local government and organisations and last but not least, the artist himself – Václav Fiala.

Alongside the official unveiling of the new permanent sculpture collection, the “Sculpture Forest”, the English translation of Fiala’s book entitled "Bed in Australia" was also launched. The book, which is a very personal recount of its author’s experiences, mishaps and impressions from his trips to Australia, was made accessible to the Australian public for the first time.

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Sydney is a regular supporter of the presentation of Czech artists in the project of the not-for-profit organisation Sculpture by the Sea. The sculpture “Universum” by Václav Fiala, which becomes the second artwork by a Czech artist to be included in the “Snowy Valleys Sculpture Trail”, as well as the release of the English version of the book “Bed in Australia”, is yet another significant contribution to strengthening the figurative bridge between the Czech Republic and Australia.

More information about the “Snowy Valleys Sculpture Trail” can be found on the website of Sculpture by the Sea, here:
