Ambassador Bálek met with IOM Director General Amy Pope

On February 12, 2024, Ambassador Václav Bálek met with the new Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Amy Pope. Both appreciated mutual cooperation, especially in the framework of the Ukrainian refugee crisis.

Amy Pope highlighted the extraordinary solidarity of Czechs in hosting Ukrainian refugees after the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The Czech Republic managed the crisis in a very efficient manner, and can serve as an example for other countries. In the next phase, cooperation on returns of Ukrainians to Ukraine can be envisaged.

The Czech Republic cooperates with the IOM not only in the context of Ukraine, but also in other countries of origin of migration and transit in Africa (e.g. Senegal or Tunisia) or on the borders of the EU, specifically in Greece. Cooperation will continue, precisely with regard to the irreplaceable role of IOM in the management of migration crises.
