First Czech Film Festival in Malaysia

On March 8, 2017,  the Embassy of the Czech Republic launched in Kuala Lumpur at the presence of over 200 guests, the first Czech Film Festival in Malaysia. The festival took place on March 9-12, 2017. The total of five outstanding Czech movies, including Oscar winning Kolya and Oscar nominated Elementary School, were showed in 30 complimentary screenings at Golden Screen Cinemas at Pavilion KL, Mid Valley and 1Utama. This unique professional presentation of accomplished Czech cinematography was meant to present the Czech Republic in Malaysia and to enhance bilateral cultural understanding.

The cinematographic presentation of some of the best Czech movies from the recent times, some of them Oscar winners or Oscar nominees, was staged in collaboration with the Golden Screen Cinemas, which is the largest cinema chain in Malaysia. It took take place in three cineplexes in the greater Kuala Lumpur area, namely GSC Pavilion KL, GSC Mid Valley and GSC 1Utama.

The films presented at the Festival were Dark Blue World, Elementary School, Kolya, Oldies but Goldies and A Vote for the King of The Romans. The movies were covering whole range of topics from medieval history through episodes from the World War II, all the way to captivating stories of the recent times.

The Czech Film Festival was meant to present the Czech cinematography to Malaysian audiences in order to enhance the Czech – Malaysia cultural understanding and increase movie appreciation in Malaysia. In this respect the Embassy was cooperating also with the National Film Development Corporation. The screening was free of charge.
